Made to order,
Our Process

Made to order,designed by you.

Every Heirloom Bookery cover is customized by you. Instead of choosing a single design, you select the size, materials, and details that make your cover truly yours — then we craft it by hand.

How it works

Five steps to a cover that's yours.

From choosing a type to the moment it's crafted by hand, here's how your cover comes together.

Start with a design
01

Choose e-reader, adjustable or fitted

Decide whether your cover is made to adapt across books, tailored to one specific volume, or built for an e-reader.

02

Select your book or device size

Match your cover to your book's height for a comfortable, well-fitting wrap.

03

Choose wood, leather, and hardware

Select the materials and finishes that give your cover its character.

04

Add personalization (optional)

Include a name, date, or detail that makes the cover uniquely yours.

05

We craft it by hand in the USA

Your cover is carefully made to order by skilled hands, from start to finish.

✦ Behind the craft ✦

Crafted with care, from start to finish.

Each cover is made to order through a thoughtful, hands-on process that honors both the materials and the story it protects.

Step One

Design & File Preparation

Each cover begins with careful design preparation. We adjust an existing template to your selected size or create a new one for fitted covers, then thoughtfully add your personalization details — such as names or dates — ensuring balanced layouts and clean engraving before anything moves to production.

Step Two

Wood Selection, Storage & Laser Engraving

Your chosen wood is pulled from our environmentally controlled storage to maintain stability and quality. Each piece is engraved and cut individually.

Step Three

Wood Sanding, Sealing & Resting

Once engraved, the wood follows a timed, multi-stage process of sanding, sealing, resting, and sanding again. Overnight, the pieces are placed in a press to help them settle properly, creating a smooth, durable surface that will age beautifully over time.

Step Four

Leather Engraving & Conditioning

While the wood rests, premium leather hides in your chosen color are engraved — a process that can take several hours. Once complete, the leather is carefully cleaned, then conditioned and treated with balm to restore softness and depth.

Step Five

Hardware, Bookmarks & Charm Work

As leather engraving continues, hardware is selected and prepared. Bookmarks are assembled by hand, with charms carefully soldered by our daughter — an extra detail that makes each cover part of our family's craft.

Step Six

Hand Stitching & Assembly

Often while listening to a favorite audiobook, we hand stitch the flaps and adjustable band for strength and longevity. The leather is then adhered to the wood, and the cover is riveted together, attaching the bookmark during this stage.

Final Details, Inspection & Packing

The cover size is engraved onto the rivet for ease of use, and every piece is carefully inspected for quality, feel, and finish before being thoughtfully packed in our in-house sewn suede bags and prepared for shipment.
